My name is Dawn Carter and I am an accredited BACP counsellor, EMDR practitioner and Couple Therapist.
I work as an integrative therapist, and although Person Centred is my underlining approach I also have training in other modalities such as Cognitive Behaviour Therapy ,Systemic Therapy and also mindfulness.
I have a nursing background both as a Registered General Nurse and Mental Health Nurse.
I worked for many years in the NHS as a Nurse Specialist in Addiction field 1990 – 2003 and completed a Post graduate Diploma in Addictive Behaviour at St Georges Hospital in Tooting 1993.
In 2003 I completed a Diploma in Person Centred Counselling and then acquired a job in the NHS working as a therapist in primary care and IAPT services where I have worked since 2019. I acquired my BACP accreditation in 2004.
Since then I have acquired great experience and knowledge working with a variety of clients from a variety of backgrounds with a variety of issues. I greatly enjoy my work as a therapist.
Clients describe me as warm, empathic, friendly, and easy to talk to, a good listener. I offer one -one therapy/ couple therapy / EMDR / in a safe relaxed environment where we focus on the issues you bring and at the pace that suits you. We collaboratively work together to help gain insight, explore a variety of coping strategies, and hopefully you are able to gain a positive sense of self.
I offer short and long term therapy, face-face and if appropriate telephone sessions that are 50 minutes long.
I completed my post graduate Diploma in Couple Therapy in 2011 and also successfully completed the Tavistock Training Course in Couple Therapy For Depression in 2016.
As Couple Therapist I can offer you and your partner therapy to focus on any relationship issues that you need to address. The aim of the 50 minute sessions is to bring understanding and empathy into your relationship rather than blame. Other issues that may be addressed are communication, problem solving, and caring behaviours.
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing )
I completed my part 4 EMDR training in May 2019 and I am now a fully trained EMDR practitioner. I offer EMDR to individuals suffering recent trauma or past events that occurred that are still not resolved and may present symptoms of Post -Traumatic Stress Disorder and disassociation. The sessions can last 50 – 90 minutes depending on outcomes. EMDR is an effective treatment recognised by Nice Guidelines for processing various types of trauma.
Since attending a mindfulness course in 2010 I regularly practice mindfulness as a form of self- care and enjoy working with clients who are interested also in this form of practice.
I look forward to meeting you.
