One of the most common questions I get is ‘how does coaching work’?
Well, coaching is both a process and a relationship – between the client and the coach.
Clients come to me because they feel stuck, confused or they are experiencing self doubt. My coaching programmes help them to get clarity, feel more confident and make positive changes to their life, business or career.
The process involves me working with client to talk about what aspects of their life, work or business they want to change, why they feel stuck and what obstacles they see in their way. Then we clarify where they want to go and I help them design their route map by asking supporting and challenging questions. Coaching gives them the time, space and inspiration to generate ideas and test their options.
The coaching process helps clients:
- Get clarity about what they want, why they want it and how they can get it.
- Bridge the gap between where they are now and where they want to be.
- Explore and define their values.
- Overcome obstacles, low confidence and insecurities.
- Explore and weigh up all their ideas and options – including ones they’ve not thought of yet.
- Turn their ideas and dreams into ambitious and achievable goals.
- Get strategies and techniques to help them to reach their goals faster.
- Get dedicated support, encouragement and motivation.
I offer my clients tools and exercises that are relevant to their situation and personal needs. These include the Life Wheel, business plans, action plans, skills assessments and exploring personal and professional values.
The end result is to set clear goals and create an achievable action plan with manageable steps to make it a reality.
For example, one of my first clients was about to leave his job and wanted to work for himself, but didn’t know in what. I asked him to list his experience, skills, values, hobbies and interests and we worked through each one to create a shortlist of what he was most drawn to or passionate about. We then used this as the basis for brainstorming and weighing up business ideas that included the things that we wanted most from work.
Very quickly he had three ideas on the table that he set himself actions to research. Within eight weeks had launched a new business that plays to his strengths and passions that works flexibly around this family life.
